WORK ON TRAIN MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE FACILITY BEGINS   (Tues., Oct. 25, 2011) — Soil sampling work began today for the rail transit system's maintenance and storage facility (MSF) in Waipahu, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) announced today.   The soil work is in preparation for construction of the facility, where the rail system's train cars will be stored and maintained. The facility will be located on a 43-acre site off Farrington Highway between Leeward Community College and Waipahu High School.   The soil work will be done weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Kiewit/Kobayashi, a Joint Venture, will conduct the soil and survey work through mid-November.   While lane closures are not required for this portion of the work, drivers and pedestrians using Ala Ike Street connecting to Leeward Community College should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the construction site. Those working, living or traveling near the work sites are advised to proceed with caution around the designated work zones and to not cross any barricades fencing off the work areas.   The MSF site will provide enough room to store and maintain up to 100 rail vehicles and will include four major structures: a train system control center; a maintenance building for track inspection and repairs; a train vehicle wash facility; and a train wheel repair center.   The facility will be environmentally-friendly and meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification. Some sustainable features may include, but are not limited to: photovoltaic panels on facility roofs to generate electricity; natural lighting and ventilation in buildings; recycled construction materials used whenever possible; and water-efficient landscaping.   Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. and Albert C. Kobayashi Inc., a Joint Venture, was awarded the $195 million contract to design and build the facility. Current project subcontractors, some locally-based, include HNTB Corporation, Maintenance Design Group, Yogi Kwong Engineers, Lyon Associates, Mid Pacific Engineering, WCIT Architecture, and when construction begins, multiple local subcontractors.   -30-   Media Contact: Scott Ishikawa cell: (808) 227-2350. office (808) 768-6172.
