Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 12 Jan 2011 18:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0000 UTC January 13 2011.

Water vapor imagery shows an upper level trough with an axis from 35°N 167°W to 30°N 1162°W. A 225 mph west-northwest to east-southeast oriented jet stream runs on the southern side of the trough. The jet has an axis from 34°N 174°E to 29°N 173°W. An area of mid/high level clouds runs along the jet axis.

The upper trough has a surface reflection scattered to broken clouds cover the main Hawaiian islands this afternoon. The low center is at 34°N 162°W and a cold front extends to 35°N 159°W to 28°N 157°W to 19°N 166°W. The cloud band associated with the front is 300 miles wide north of 26°N and consists of dense layered clouds with tops to 35 kft. A 220 mile wide band of low and midlevel clouds with embedded towering cumulus /tcu/ clouds lines the southern portion of the front. Ahead of the front, broken layered clouds with scattered TCU and cumulonimbus clouds cover from the front to eastward to 148°W and north of 18°N. Broken clouds cover the main Hawaiian islands with some clearing beginning to occur over the leeward coastal and offshore waters. The only island showing any significant breaks in this cloud coverage is the leeward Big Island, from South Point to Kailua-Kona.

Thunderstorms associated with the ITCZ cover an area from 07°N to 13°N and 133°W to 148°W. Cloud tops extend to 35 kft in height. Broken cumulus and altocumulus clouds cover an area from 05°N to 12°N and 155°W to 171°W.
