Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 09 Jan 2011 12:30:00 -0600
Based on data through 1800 UTC January 09 2011.
The islands lie within a cool, dry and stable westerly wind flow this morning, with scattered to locally broken shallow stratocumulus /sc/ clouds over near shore waters, and to a lesser extent, along the island's lower slopes exposed to the west and northwest. Low cloud motions have slowed over the past 6 to 12 hours, and are now moving toward the east-southeast at 10 to 12 mph. Thin high clouds over the region have continued their overnight thinning trend, with little in the way of high clouds now near the islands. A front to the northwest of the islands has a mass of cold cloud tops, that have been cooling over the past several hours, north of 26°N between 162°W and 173°W.
Skies over most island areas are mostly sunny this morning, despite the broken low clouds over the near shore waters. Exceptions to the mostly sunny rule include the north shore of Kauai, the northwest portion of Oahu, the west side of west Maui, and the northwest coast of the Big Island, where scattered to locally broken low clouds exist.
A deep-layered low centered about 750 miles northeast of the Big Island is partially responsible for the westerly flow over the islands, and has been moving slowly toward the east over the past 12 hours. Scattered thunderstorms are occurring near the center of the low, and to its east, from 27°N to 34°N between 141°W and 151°W. Another area of deep convection is located well southeast of the low, from 12°N to 22°N between 140°W and 150°W.
A front far northwest of the main Hawaiian islands has been heading east at 25 to 30 mph along 30°N. The front had been affecting Midway atoll overnight, but has now moved east of the atoll, where few to scattered low clouds now prevail.
