November 28 2014 Contact:  Jon Hennington, DPR Public Information Officer, 343-9181   Mayor Caldwell reopens Banzai Rock Skate Park       Pûpûkea – Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Department of Parks and Recreation Director Michele Nekota were joined by North Shore Neighborhood Board member Sharlyn Foo, North Shore Mission Pastor Butch Perreira, Randy Rarick from the Triple Crown of Surfing, local schoolchildren, and professional skateboarders Evan Mock, Chris Miyashiro, Noah Doak, and Malakai, Noah, and Rick Montes today to reopen the expanded and improved Banzai Rock Skate Park.       "The North Shore community embraces its surf and skate culture like nowhere else in the world," said Mayor Caldwell.  "This skate park will be utilized by residents of all ages and is a place for the community to come together in active and productive outdoor recreation."   The expansion includes the completion of the "street elements" section of the park, fulfilling the park's original concept.  The new elements include ramps, banks, rails, and stairs that are laid out and designed to accommodate skaters of all skill levels.   The project also included construction of a 30-stall parking lot and the addition of landscaping to the entire site.   The park expansion was designed by Design Partners, Incorporated.  The construction contract was awarded to Henry's Equipment Rental & Sales, Inc. in March 2013.  The project was completed and accepted on November 24, 2014.  The construction contract amount is $1,103,921.   -END-
