GREASE CAUSES SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW IN WAIPAHU   (Sat., Dec. 4, 2010) – The City's Department of Environmental Services responded late Friday night to a sanitary sewer overflow in Waipahu. The call came in at 11:00 p.m.  An ENV crew arrived at the scene at 11:35 p.m. with the site secured at 12:10 a.m. Saturday morning. Grease clogged a 10-inch vitrified clay sewer pipe causing the overflow from a manhole at the intersection of Awamoi and Waipahu Street.  An estimated 5,250 gallons of raw wastewater was discharged.  Approximately 4,700 gallons made its way into a nearby storm drain, which leads to Waikele Stream and eventually Pearl Harbor's West Loch.  An ENV Vactor truck was able to recover 300 gallons and about 250 gallons dissipated into the ground. ENV notified the state Department of Health and the U.S. Navy.  The affected area has been cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.  Signing and water sampling will begin at dawn.                                            -30-      Contact:  Markus Owens, ENV Public Communications Officer, 768-3454
