Wednesday, July 16, 2014 Contact:  Mayor Caldwell's Press Office, 768-5768     Update on repair work at intersection of Hamakua Drive and Kailua Road   Kailua – A contractor hired by the city continues to work around-the-clock repairing the sinkhole created Friday, July 11, at the intersection of Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive.  The work is expected to continue through the weekend as crews excavate and repair a damaged sewer line.    Motorists can anticipate delays due to lane closures associated with the work.  Signs have been posted on Pali Highway before Quarry Road and before the Castle Hospital intersection alerting motorists of the construction   Drivers may want to consider taking an alternative route to Kailua by proceeding east on Kalanianaole Highway at Castle Junction and north on Keolu Drive into Kailua.    -END-

Tuesday, July 15, 2014 Contact:           Mayor Caldwell's Press Office, 768-5768            Kelly Cruz, DTS, 768-8320, kcruz@honolulu.gov     ***TODAY*** City to host Complete Streets Public Information Meeting   Honolulu – The City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) will hold a Complete Streets Public Information Meeting tonight, Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Center, Pikake Room.    Complete Streets are streets that are safe and accessible for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation.  They allow pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and public transportation to share the road and get around efficiently and conveniently.    The meeting is being held to highlight the work being done by the City and County of Honolulu to make our streets safer, more convenient and more accessible for all users, including motorists, transit riders, pedestrians and bicyclists.   DTS will conduct the meeting to review Honolulu's Complete Streets Ordinance, introduce the community to complete streets concepts, review existing complete streets projects, discuss a proposed complete streets' manual for the City and County of Honolulu and respond to questions and comments from the community.    Dan Burden, Co-Founder and Director of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, will be present as part of the SSFM International team to assist DTS with Honolulu's complete streets policies.   "This is a great opportunity for the public to learn more about Complete Streets and the exciting opportunities ahead to create more livable communities on Oahu," said Mike Formby, Director, DTS.   -END-

Tuesday, July 15, 2014 Contact:  Mayor Caldwell's Press Office, 768-5768     Repair work at intersection of Hamakua Drive and Kailua Road   Kailua – The City and County of Honolulu is advising motorists to use caution and expect delays driving into Kailua town this week.   A broken sewer line is suspected to be the cause of the sink hole that developed Friday, July 11, 2014, at the intersection of Hamakua Drive and Kailua Road.   The city has hired Frank Coluccio Construction Company to uncover and repair the suspected broken pipe.  A pump bypass is set up around the construction site to keep wastewater flowing to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.   Crews are expected to be working around the clock for an estimated week, with at least two lanes on Kailua Road closed, traveling into Kailua town.   -END-

July 11, 2014   Traffic Advisory: Lane closures for Honolulu rail transit project   The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) would like to inform drivers about lane closures next week related to design and construction work for the Honolulu rail transit project. Motorists are advised that work along the 20-mile rail route from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center will require lane closures during non-peak traffic hours.   For the safety of both the work crews and motorists, the public is advised to proceed with caution through these areas. Drivers should anticipate possible traffic delays or use alternate routes during work hours, and provide a safe distance between their vehicles and workers and equipment.   EWA   Farrington Highway between Kualakai Parkway (North-South Road) and Old Fort Weaver Road will be closed overnight from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following morning for utility relocation work. Drivers traveling between East Kapolei and the Ewa/Waipahu region during the overnight closures will still be able to use either the H-1 Freeway on the north end of Kualakai Parkway, or Kapolei Parkway on the south end. That nightly detour will run until the end of July.   Left turns from Farrington Highway in Ewa onto Fort Weaver Road heading northbound will be restricted 24/7 through the end of July for column construction. Eastbound drivers using Farrington Highway will be asked to make a detour up Leoku Street to access Fort Weaver Road through either Leolua or Waipahu streets.   H-1 FREEWAY WAIAWA INTERCHANGE   Two southbound lanes of the H-2 Freeway near the Waiawa Interchange (H-1/H-2 merge) will be closed overnight from Sunday, July 13 to Thursday, July 17 between 8:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. the following morning for utility work.   WAIPAHU   The eastbound lanes of Farrington Highway between Leokane Street and Pupukahi Street will be closed overnight from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for utility work. The Leokane Street intersection will also be closed overnight during those hours.   The westbound lanes of Farrington Highway between Aniani Place and Waipahu Depot Road will be closed from Wednesday, July 16 to Friday, July 18 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for utility work.   The inside lanes of Farrington Highway between Mokuola Street and Waipahu Depot Road will be closed overnight Monday, July 14 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for construction preparation work.   The inside lanes of Farrington Highway near Kahualii Street fronting Waipahu High School will be closed from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for construction preparation work. The westbound left-turn pockets from Farrington Highway onto Waipio Point Access Road and Awanui Streets will also be reduced during construction.   Alternating inside and outside lane closures will take place along Farrington Highway near Waipahu High School on Tuesday, July 15 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for construction preparation work.   The westbound lane of Ala Ike Street fronting Leeward Community College will be closed Monday, July 14 and Tuesday, July 15 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for construction preparation work.   PEARL CITY   Two westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes along Kamehameha Highway will be closed overnight between Waiawa Road (near Leeward Community College) and Waimano Home Road from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. for utility relocation/excavation work: Left turns at Waimano Home Road and Puu Momi Street will be restricted after 8 p.m. The outside eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway in the same area will be closed weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 for utility location work.   Two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway will be closed overnight between Puu Poni Street and Kuleana Road from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. The inner eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway in the same area, including the left turn lane at Kuleana Road, will be closed 24/7 for several weeks for utility work. Two westbound lanes will be closed on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.   AIEA/ALOHA STADIUM   The following lane closures will take place on Kamehameha Highway between Hekaha and Kanuku Streets: The inside eastbound lane will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with restrictions of left turns. The inside eastbound and westbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway will be closed Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. for equipment removal.   The left eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway between Lipoa Place and Pali Momi Street will be closed 24 hours a day for test shaft work.   The right eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway between the Moanalua Freeway on-ramp and Salt Lake Boulevard will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week for roadway widening and installation of utility lines for traffic signals. One westbound lane of Kamehameha Highway in the same vicinity will also be closed from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and between 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.   Aiea Access Road between the Moanalua Freeway on-ramp and Kamehameha Highway near Aloha Stadium will be closed overnight from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. the following morning. Southbound traffic will be detoured onto Moanalua Freeway during the road closure.   AIRPORT/PEARL HARBOR   Overnight lane closures will take place at the Honolulu International Airport from Sunday, July 13 to Thursday, July 17 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following morning for soil testing: Left eastbound lane of Aolele Street between the Airport Post Office and Aopoko Place   KALIHI   Overnight lane closures will take place at the following location in Kalihi from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 7:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. for soil testing: Left lanes of Dillingham Boulevard in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Kalihi Street and Waiakamilo Road   DOWNTOWN/KAKAAKO   Lane closures will take place in Kakaako at the following location from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for soil testing: Right lane of Halekauwila Street in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Mililani Street and Keawe Street.   For updates on work days and times, visit the project website at www.honolulutransit.org or contact our hotline at 566-2299.   -END-   Media Contact: Scott Ishikawa. Thursday, July 10, 2014 Contact: Mayor Caldwell's Press Office, 768-5768   Midsummer Night's Gleam returns to Foster Botanical Garden       Photos from last year's Midsummer Night's Gleam   Honolulu – The City and County of Honolulu's Foster Botanical Garden will once again be transformed into a magical wonderland on Saturday, July, 19.  Midsummer Night's Gleam will begin at 4 p.m., when the park-like garden will be adorned with more than 2,500 luminaries sparkling along the pathways that weave through the facility.   Visitors to the garden will enjoy an eclectic selection of live entertainment throughout the event, including lively belly dancers, agile lion dancers, the Golden Horde's Mongolian tribesmen, and sparring knights.  Later in the evening, the event will feature an exciting performance at the main terrace by Sewa Fare, a West-African drum and dance ensemble.    Additionally, Foster Botanical Garden will offer a variety of children's activities from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., including painting, a bamboo music wall, seed toss, bubbles, balloons, and arts and crafts.  This special event will also feature a living wall display made of succulent plants, and a life-size elephant made of recycled bottles.   Foster Botanical Garden, located in downtown Honolulu at 50 North Vineyard Boulevard, is the oldest of the city's botanical gardens.  The garden displays a mature and impressive collection of tropical plants.  Some of the magnificent trees in this 14-acre garden were planted in the 1850s by Dr. William Hillebrand.  The garden also includes a palm collection, the Lyon Orchid Garden, a hybrid orchid display, the Prehistoric Glen, and a gift shop.   Foster Botanical Garden will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and reopen from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the day of the Gleam.  Normal hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day of the year except for Christmas Day and New Year's Day.   Admission to Midsummer Night's Gleam is free.  For more information, please call 522-7066.       -END-

Thursday, July 10, 2014 Contact: Mayor Caldwell's Press Office, 768-5768   Kawaikui Beach Park tree removal and pruning   Kuliouou – Beginning today, July 10, 2014, a tree care company hired by the city is removing two Kiawe trees and will later prune a third Kiawe tree at Kawaikui Beach Park.  Municipal arborists from the city's Division of Urban Forestry determined the two trees warranted removal.   The Ewa driveway into the park is being closed during the removal work, and the public will be directed to use the Koko Head driveway as both the entrance and exit.   The contractor is scheduled to begin pruning the third tree on Monday, July 14, to reduce the weight of the tree's canopy.  This work will require the makai lane of traffic on Kalanianaole Highway to be intermittently closed.   No work will be conducted over the weekend, and the project is expected to be completed by Wednesday, July 16, 2014.   -END-
