Friday, January 23, 2015 Honolulu press office: (808) 768-5768 Contact: Information Specialist Adam LeFebvre: (808) 779-4920 (cell) Honolulu Zoo giraffe laid to rest HONOLULU Yasmin, a 24-year-old giraffe at the Honolulu Zoo who had been struggling from complications related to her old age, was humanely laid to rest yesterday. Zoo veterinarians followed current American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines to put her to sleep and avoid any further suffering. She lived a long life in Hawaii. Giraffes have an average life expectancy of 10-15 years in the wild and 20-25 years in captivity, which makes Yasmin's life an especially long one. Since coming to the Honolulu Zoo from Texas in 1992, Yasmin has given birth to four giraffes. Photo courtesy of Brian Underwood - END - |
