Friday, August 29, 2014 Mayor Caldwell's press office, 768-5768 (Jesse Broder Van Dyke mobile: 489-0341) Waimanu Street two-way conversion project to start Tuesday Kaka'ako/Ala Moana - On Tuesday, September 2, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company will begin work on the conversion of Waimanu Street into a two-way street. Waimanu Street between Pensacola Street and Pi'ikoi Street is currently a four-lane, one-way, eastbound (Diamond Head-bound) road. The mauka lane of Waimanu will converted into a westbound lane with on-street parking. The conversion work will require traffic signal modifications on Waimanu at both Pensacola and Pi'ikoi. The operational conversion of Waimanu Street into a two-way street is expected to: · Improve traffic circulation in the immediate vicinity; · Provide greater connectivity for bicycles and vehicles in a region that will include a major rail transit station on Kona Street at the Ala Moana Center; · Improve access to properties along the conversion alignment by minimizing "around the block" travel; · Directly link adjacent neighborhoods and eliminate the need to travel on the heavily-congested Ala Moana Boulevard; · Provide a direct eastbound and westbound connection between future rail stations in Kaka'ako and at the Ala Moana Center; · Facilitate and encourage connectivity consistent with complete streets principles. The Waimanu Street two-way conversion project is expected to be completed before Christmas this year. For more information about the project, contact Boyd Marumoto, Senior Project Manager, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, (808) 735-7458. -END- |
