CITY SETS ALA MOANA TOD COMMUNITY WORKSHOP   (Fri., August 3, 2012) — The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) will hold the first of three community workshops for residents and businesses to create the Ala Moana Neighborhood Transit-Oriented Development Plan.               The workshop is set for Tuesday, August 7, from 6-8 p.m. in the McKinley High School Cafeteria. Light refreshments will be provided.               A rail transit station is planned next to the Ala Moana Shopping Center on Kona Street, and there are exciting possibilities for transit-oriented development (TOD) in the area surrounding the station. DPP will be soliciting ideas on how to best improve public spaces to facilitate TOD, as well as the kinds of development that should be reflected in private sector projects, including housing, retail, office and other uses.               The Ala Moana neighborhood is a vibrant, growing community with several major projects being contemplated, such as the redevelopment of the Central YMCA, new housing towers, and a Korean architecture-based "Korea Town." What community development goals and strategies for the future should be used to evaluate each of these proposals? Community representatives will be asked to develop these goals and strategies, beginning with the August 7 meeting.               Community participation is key to a successful transit-oriented development plan.
