CITY RESTARTS 'SAFE SIDEWALKS PROJECT' WITH HAWAII LIONS (Sat., April 28, 2012)Mayor Peter Carlisle today announced that the City and the Lions Clubs of Hawaii are working together to make short-term repairs to sidewalks. Work began this morning in Chinatown where Hawaii Lions provided a volunteer labor force to the Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM) along Nuuanu Avenue, Smith Street and Maunakea Street. The City owns approximately 1,800 miles of sidewalks that need to be properly maintained to address damage from weathering, tree roots, and regular pedestrian use. To leverage resources, DFM is restarting the Safe Sidewalks Project and collaborating with volunteer organizations to make short-term sidewalk repairs until City crews can implement a long-term solution. "I want to thank the Lions for supplying the extra hands and supporting their community," Carlisle said. "It is a priority for this administration to maintain and improve City sidewalks and that's why we put about four million dollars in next year's budget for sidewalk improvements and reconstruction." Through the Safe Sidewalks Project, DFM will conduct a field reconnaissance in an area of interest, provide materials and supplies, and oversee the volunteer work. This is the third year that the City has worked with the Hawaii Lions to maintain and keep Oahu sidewalks safe. The Lions Clubs perform tens of thousands of service projects annually worldwide. The Safe Sidewalks Project was recognized by Lions Clubs International by placing in the top three as an international award winning service project in 2010. Hawaii Lions have been in the islands for 85 years and currently have over 1,800 members in 65 local clubs throughout the state. Members volunteer their talents, time, and skills to assist and serve the people of Hawaii with projects that make a difference. The Safe Sidewalks Project will target other parts of Oahu including Waikiki on June 30, 2012. -30- Media Contact: Westley Chun, DFM Director, 768-3343 http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=282912788463700 |
