WAIMANALO GULCH SANITARY landfill begins limited acceptance of residential bulky waste     (Wed., March 2, 2011) – The City and County of Honolulu and Waste Management of Hawaii (WMH) announced today that Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill (WGSL) will reopen on a limited basis, on Sundays only, to accept residential bulky wastes beginning March 6.  The landfill will also accept commercial loads on a limited basis beginning March 2 (excepting Sundays).  WGSL hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   The limited reopening of the landfill is made possible by the completion of significant repairs to the landfill's liner system in waste cell E6, which was damaged in the severe storm of January 13.  These repairs were approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) and allow WMH to ready the cell to accept waste.   Additional repairs and related work remain ongoing at WGSL, as does the remaining work on the functionally complete storm water diversion channel, which will direct potential up-canyon storm water away from the landfill.  The completion of the storm water diversion channel was an important milestone set forth in the January 25 Consent Agreement between WMH and the EPA.  The Consent Agreement memorialized work already implemented by WMH at WGSL and WMH reports it is on target to meet all milestones outlined in the agreement.   WGSL remains an essential component of the City's Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan as evidenced by the need to dispose of accumulated residential bulky items and to relieve the heavy trash backlog at the City's transfer stations and H-POWER.       -30-     Contact:  Markus Owens, ENV Public Communications Officer, 351-6305
