Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Tue, 25 Jan 2011 12:30:00 -0600
Based on data through 1800 UTC January 25 2011.
A broad field of scattered to broken low clouds are seen over the open waters mainly to the north and northeast of the state. These clouds are generally moving westward in a light trade wind environment.
Low cloud coverage over the islands was rather sparse for the most part early this Tuesday morning. The islands of Kauai Oahu Molokai and Lanai were nearly free of low clouds. Over Maui patches of low clouds are present over the eastern and southern slopes of Haleakala. Over the Big Island low clouds are banked up over the windward slopes in the Hilo and Puna districts with just a few patches of low clouds over the southeast Kau slopes.
The leading edge of a frontal band can be seen extending from 30°N 157°W to 25°N 164°W to 22°N 170°W. This front is moving toward the east at around 25 mph. The frontal band is about 150 miles wide and consists mainly of cumulus and stratocumulus cloud elements. Deep convection along the front is confined to areas north of 30°N.
