Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Based on data through 1800 UTC January 27 2011.

The east edge of a weak, narrow frontal cloud band extended from 30°N 140°W to 25°N 148.5°W. The band was about 65 miles wide near 30°N and 45 miles wide at the southwest end. It remained nearly stationary and consisted of broken to overcast cumulus and stratocumulus clouds.

The decaying front actually lies within a ridge of high pressure sitting north of the islands. The ridge was sweeping clusters of mostly broken cumulus clouds into the state from the east. At 8 am, most of these low clouds were heading into the windward sides of the Big Island, Maui and Molokai. These cloud clusters extended from the state east to 149°W, between 18°N and 21°N.

A narrow, northeast-southwest oriented line of broken low clouds was just reaching the east coast of Kauai. And a long, slightly showery plume of broken to overcast low clouds meandered toward the west-southwest from the south Kona coast to beyond 160°W. The low clouds in the vicinity of the islands were moving west near 20 miles an hour.

A weak surface trough was passing south of the state. The trough axis extended from 15°N 159°W to 11°N 161°W. Showery, broken cumulus clouds within a roughly 160 miles wide band curved along the north half of the trough. The north edge of this so-called cloud band extended from 14°N 162°W to 17°N 160°W to 17°N 158°W to 14°N 154°W. The trough was moving west near 12 miles an hour.

A stationary upper low in the vicinity of 16°N 145°W was promoting thunderstorm formation along the ITCZ between 09°N 139°W and 06°N 150°W. At the opposite end of the large picture, a frontal cloud band was slowly approaching from the northwest. The south edge of the cloud band stretched from 30°N 162°W to 25°N 180°E.
