Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 01 Jan 2011 23:30:00 -0600
Based on data through 0500 UTC January 02 2011.
A north northeast to south southwest oriented trough is about 250 miles west of Kauai this evening. Water vapor imagery shows an upper level low has formed along the trough near 20.9°N 164.3°W, about 300 miles west southwest of the garden isle. The upper trough is sending high clouds over the main Hawaiian islands from the southwest. The high clouds are thickest over the western islands, and thinnest over Maui and the Big Island.
The high clouds mentioned above are obscuring lower clouds over Niihau and Kauai, and partially obscuring low clouds over Oahu, Lanai and Molokai. Through thin spots in the high clouds in the last visible image animation of the day, low clouds on Oahu appear to be confined to the southern half of the Koolau mountain range. Scattered low clouds appear to be over the Halawa Valley on Molokai, and the interior of Lanai.
On Maui, scattered low clouds are found over the west Maui mountains, and over the lower slopes of Haleakala. The skies over Kahoolawe appear to cloud free except for the occasional high clouds streaming overhead. The high clouds reaching the Big Island do make it difficult to discern lower clouds this evening. Through animation and thin spots in the high clouds, low clouds appear to be located over the southeast facing slopes of the Kau district, and over the west facing slopes of the north Kona and south Kona districts, with scattered low clouds over the remaining lower slopes.
Low clouds east of the Big Island are moving from the east between 15 and 20 mph.
Thunderstorms are noted in an area about 350 miles southwest of the Big Island, centered near 13°N 159°W. Cloud tops in the area are reaching near 43 thousand feet.
