Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 01 Jan 2011 06:30:00 -0600
Based on data through 1200 UTC January 01 2011.
A north northeast to south southwest oriented upper level trough is noted on water vapor imagery, about 450 miles northwest of Kauai at 2 am. The trough axis lies along a line from 35.0°N 159.8°W to 20.4°N 168.9°W. The upper level low associated with this trough is more than 1700 miles north of Kauai overnight. Water vapor imagery also shows an upper low more than 2000 miles northeast of the islands near 42.5°N 133.6°W. High clouds are passing over the islands as the result of these upper level systems.
The system to the northwest of the islands has layered clouds with the leading edge of clouds about 200 miles northwest of Kauai at 2 am. Embedded thunderstorms with tops near 38000 feet are noted within the layered clouds, primarily north of 25°N.
The high clouds passing over the main Hawaiian islands mentioned above are obscuring lower clouds over the islands overnight. The high clouds are moving over the islands from west to east. Through thin spots in the high clouds, low clouds east of the Big Island are seen moving in from the east around 15 mph, while low cloud movement near Kauai is difficult to discern.
Isolated thunderstorms are noted near 17.4°N 161.7°W, 19.5°N 163.5°W, 22.1°N 164.9°W and 24.1°N 165.0°W. These four areas have thunderstorm tops reaching between 35000 and 40000 feet. These areas are between 300 and 350 miles from the main Hawaiian islands.
Additional thunderstorms are noted in the ITCZ south of the islands along a line from 7.0°N 162.9°W to 9.4°N 158.2°W with tops near 47000 feet.
