03/09/15 Honolulu Hale to change color in support of "NO MORE Week" March 9, 2015 Contact: Mayor Caldwell's Press Office: 768-5768 (cell 489-0341) Honolulu Hale to change color in support of “NO MORE Week” to end domestic violence and sexual assault Honolulu Hale will be lit in the color aqua evenings during the week of March 9-15, in support of Mayor Caldwell’s proclamation of NO MORE Week in the City and County of Honolulu. NO MORE Week is a national effort to engage communities to action and raise awareness of issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault, which will include a series of events throughout O‘ahu. “Domestic violence and sexual assault have devastating impacts on the lives of individuals, families, and entire communities,” said Mayor Caldwell.  “We must do more to address this problem. Initiatives such as NO MORE Week provide a powerful platform to amplify awareness of domestic and sexual violence, and better leverage the resources available to assist its survivors.” On the local level, this initiative is supported by Hawaii says NO MORE, a group of individuals and organizations throughout the state committed to reflecting Hawaii’s unique culture and community values in its approach to addressing domestic violence and sexual assaults. 03/06/15 Traffic Advisory: Lane closures for Honolulu rail transit project March 6, 2015 Traffic Advisory: Lane closures for Honolulu rail transit project The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) would like to inform drivers about lane closures for the week of March 8-14 as related to design and construction work for the Honolulu rail transit project. Motorists are advised that work along the 20-mile rail route from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center will require lane closures during non-peak traffic hours. For the safety of both the work crews and motorists, the public is advised to proceed with caution through these areas. Drivers should anticipate possible traffic delays or use alternate routes during work hours, and provide a safe distance between their vehicles and workers and equipment: EAST KAPOLEI/EWA (FARRINGTON HIGHWAY) Seven days a week through the end of March 2015 Kualakai Parkway (North-South Road) to Old Fort Weaver Road Farrington Highway between Kualakai Parkway (North-South Road) and Old Fort Weaver Road Loop will be closed in both directions over the next three weekends for rail guideway work crossing over the highway. The section of highway will close each weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday and reopen 5 a.m. Monday. During the highway closure, drivers travelling between East Kapolei and the Ewa/Waipahu region will still be able to access either end by using the H-1 Freeway or Kapolei Parkway/Geiger Road. On weekdays, the eastbound direction of Farrington Highway will be open from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The contractor will reclose that section of highway each weeknight from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for rail guideway construction through the end of March 2015. H-1 FREEWAY WAIAWA INTERCHANGE Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. H-1/H-2 Freeways near Leeward Community College Up to three westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway approaching the H-1/H-2 merge (Waiawa Interchange) will be closed overnight Sunday through Thursday. Rail guideway work crossing the H-1 Freeway is scheduled to run until 2016. WAIPAHU (FARRINGTON HIGHWAY) Monday through Friday lane closures Leoku Street to Leokane Street The westbound lanes of Farrington Highway are closed between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The inside lanes of Farrington Highway in the same area are closed between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Left turns will be restricted in the westbound direction from Farrington Highway onto Leoole Street. Waipahu Depot Road to Mokuola Street The outside lanes of Farrington Highway are closed weeknights between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The inside lanes of Farrington Highway in the same area are closed between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Pupupuhi Street to Aniani Place The outside lanes of Farrington Highway are closed weeknights between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Kahualii Street to the Kamehameha Highway overpass The outside lanes of Farrington Highway are closed weeknights between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. PEARL CITY (KAMEHAMEHA HIGHWAY) 24-hour lane closures Waiawa Road to Waimano Home Road One eastbound lane and one of the two eastbound left-turn lanes from Kamehameha Highway onto Acacia Road fronting Pearl Highlands Center are closed 24/7 through Summer 2015. Eastbound U-turns will be allowed at the intersection during the work. One westbound left-turn lane and the inside westbound lane of Kamehameha Highway near the Acacia Road intersection will also be closed 24/7 through Summer 2015. Tentatively beginning Monday, March 16, similar 24/7 lane closures will take place along Kamehameha Highway at the adjacent intersection of Waimano Home Road. Monday through Friday lane closures Waiawa Road to Waimano Home Road One westbound lane of Kamehameha Highway near Acacia Road is closed weeknights between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. with various left-turn pocket restrictions. One eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway in the same vicinity is also closed weeknights between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The intersections at Acacia Road and Waimano Home Road are closed after 9 p.m.  Kuleana Road to Kaonohi Street Two westbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed weeknights between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. with various left-turn pocket restrictions. Two eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are also closed overnight between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Kuleana Road to Kaonohi Street One eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway near Kuleana Road (HECO-Waiau power plant) and fronting Neal Blaisdell Park near Kaahumanu Street also remains closed 24/7 until the end of March. Alternate lane closures will take place along Kaluamoi Place off Kamehameha Highway between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays. One lane will remain open at all times. Utility relocation work in area scheduled to run until mid-2015  AIEA/ALOHA STADIUM (KAMEHAMEHA HIGHWAY) Monday through Friday lane closures Lipoa Place to Pali Momi Street One eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway near the Pearl Kai Shopping Center remains closed 24/7 until the end of March. Two westbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. with various left-turn pocket restrictions. Two eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.    Monday through Friday lane closures Pali Momi Street to Honomanu Street Two westbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. with various left-turn pocket restrictions. Two eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. One eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway near McGrew Point is closed 24/7 through Spring 2015 Intersection at Honomanu Street closed after 9 p.m. One lane of the Moanalua Freeway on-ramp closed weeknights between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.  Near Aloha Stadium Two westbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed weeknights between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. with various left-turn pocket restrictions. Two eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.  PEARL HARBOR/AIRPORT Monday through Friday lane closures Kamehameha Highway from Arizona Street to Makalapa Drive Two eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway are closed weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for utility work. Kamehameha Highway and Makalapa Road/Radford Drive Intersection The right-turn lane from Kamehameha Highway onto Radford Drive is closed weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for utility work. Right turns will still be permitted at the intersection. Kamehameha Highway from Makalapa Road to Center Drive Two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of Kamehameha Highway are closed weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for utility work. The left-turn lane into Makalapa Gate will be contraflowed along the highway median.  Monday through Friday lane closures Kamehameha Highway and Center Drive Intersection The westbound bus stop at Kamehameha Highway and Center Drive is temporarily closed on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for utility work. Comments are encouraged now and during the meeting on a new interactive community participation application available at www.ouralamoanapark.com. The workshop will focus on the future of Ala Moana Beach Park as a world-class park and well-utilized community resource for generations to come.  Plans for the park’s future will stem from how people use the park today and want to use the park going forward.  Tuesday’s meeting is the beginning of a public dialogue that will integrate how the community views the park, what you love about the park, and what changes you’d like made to Ala Moana Regional Park. 03/05/15 Mayor Caldwell signs three bills into law Thursday, March 5, 2015 Mayor Caldwell's Press Office: 768-5768   Mayor Caldwell signs three bills into law Honolulu – Mayor Caldwell has signed Bills 76, 77, and 78 (2014) into law.  All three bills passed final reading before the Honolulu City Council unanimously on February 18, 2015. Bill 76 (2014), CD1, introduced by request of the administration, increases the Palace Square (U.S. Post Office, Downtown Honolulu) parking meter time limit with associated fees. Bill 77 (2014), introduced by Council Chair Ernie Martin, broadens the notice and publication requirements for the Real Property Tax Boards of Appeal and consolidates existing information into a hearing notice format.  Bill 78 (2014), CD1, introduced by Councilmember Ann Kobayashi and former Councilmember Stanley Chang, requires that the interest earned, after the effective date of the bill, on deposits into the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Fund be deposited in the Fund.   -END-

03/03/15 City seeks art for Waianae Police Station Tuesday, March 3, 2015 Contact: Mayor Caldwell's Press Office: 768-5768 (cell 489-0341) City seeks art for the Wai‘anae Police Station Honolulu - The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts will commission a work of art for the Wai‘anae Police Station replacement building, located at 85-939 Farrington Highway. Artists are encouraged to submit a proposal by the August 7, 2015 deadline.  The budget for this project is $70,000. The Commission seeks an artwork that tells a story of the Wai‘anae area and enhances the exterior of the building.  The artwork area is the decorative band, 65 feet wide by five feet high, between the first and second floors on the building’s east side.  The artwork may be a fresco, frieze, mosaic, mural, sculpture, or other wall-mounted work of art that is permanently installed, and must be of a durable material.
