MAYOR DEDICATES NEW TRANSIT CENTER AND BUSES   (Mon., Aug. 6, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle joined transportation officials today to dedicate the new Alapai Transit Center and 48 new fuel-efficient buses.   "The Alapai Transit Center is a great addition to our award-winning bus system," Carlisle said. "The center provides a safe, clean, efficient terminal for passengers served by some of our busiest bus routes."   The transit center serves afternoon peak-period Commuter Express routes and all-day routes 11, 15, 43, 52, 53, 54 and 62.   The center includes four bus shelters with a total of 140 seats, informational boards, a landscaped bicycle and pedestrian path, and a bus layover area under the parking garage for the new Joint Traffic Management Center now under design.   The new Gillig Bus Manufacturing buses feature the most current EPA-certified clean diesel ISL Cummins engine, the latest fuel efficient Voith 5-speed transmission, and an "all electric" ThermoKing air conditioning system that provides for quieter operation and a more stable passenger compartment temperature.   The City is acquiring forty 40-foot buses and eight 35-foot buses. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                               August 3, 2012   ONLINE CAMPING PERMITS ACCESSIBLE ON MOBILE DEVICES   (Fri., August 3, 2012)—The City's Departments of Parks and Recreation, and Information Technology jointly announce the release of the responsive redesign of camping.honolulu.gov, which will facilitate online camping reservations on mobile devices.                Customers are now able to browse campsites and make reservations from iPhones, iPads, or various Android devices.  They will also be able to register and manage their own accounts from the device.  The Department of Parks and Recreation campsites are accessible online at camping.honolulu.gov.               For more information, contact the City's camping specialist at (808)768-2267, or email your questions as honolulucamping@honolulu.gov.        -30-

HONOLULU ZOO CHIMPANZEE DIES (Fri., August 3, 2012)—The Honolulu Zoo is sad to report that its18-year-old chimpanzee has died. Ke`aloha (Kea), a favorite of zoo visitors for nearly two decades, passed away early this morning.             The cause of death is being determined, and extensive laboratory tests taken during the period when he began showing signs of illness are being reviewed. Earlier this week zookeepers were alerted that there were potential health issues when Kea became lethargic.            Kea was admitted to the Zoo's Veterinary Clinic Tuesday for a complete examination when he did not respond to medication.  The cause of death will be determined when all lab results are completed.               Kea is survived by his parents Roscoe and Kumi, and older brother Kibale. Members of the zoo staff are making all efforts to allow his survivors to express their loss and appropriate grieving behaviors. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 3, 2012   TRAFFIC ADVISORY: LANE CLOSURES FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEYWORK IN URBAN HONOLULU   The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) wants to inform drivers that archaeological survey work continues next week in the urban Honolulu area for the rail transit project.   Motorists are advised of lane closures related to the survey work being conducted in the Pearl Harbor, Airport and Kaka'ako areas. Work will require lane closures during non-peak traffic hours.   For the safety of both the work crews and motorists, the public is advised to proceed with caution through these areas. Drivers should anticipate possible traffic delays or use alternate routes during work hours, and provide a safe distance between themselves and the construction workers and equipment.   Work for the week of Sunday, August 5, through Saturday, August 11, will take place at the following locations between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.:   Kamehameha Highway between Salt Lake Boulevard and Aolele Street Queen/Waimanu Street between Kamakee Street and Pensacola Street Kona Street between Kamakee Street and Piikoi Street   The City is conducting the archaeological survey work along the urban Honolulu section of the Honolulu rail transit route to identify potential archaeological, historical and cultural resources. The archaeological work will aid rail project staff in their design of the elevated rail guideway.   Contractors Cultural Surveys Hawaii Inc. and Royal Contracting Co. are conducting the fieldwork. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                      August 3, 2012   MAYOR CARLISLE WELCOMES SISTER-CITY DELEGATION FROM KAOHSIUNG   (Fri., Aug. 3, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today welcomed to Honolulu a delegation from Kaohsiung City, Republic of China (Taiwan) to commemorate fifty years of sister-city ties and sign a reaffirmation agreement.   "The City and County of Honolulu is very proud of our half-century of friendship with Kaohsiung," Carlisle said. "Leaders and citizens of both cities have developed and nurtured a strong partnership through economic, cultural and social exchanges." The reaffirmation agreement signed by Carlisle and Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Liu Shih-Fang renewed the cities' commitment to the ideals of friendship and mutual respect that first established the sister-city relationship in September of 1962.   To celebrate, the City will present a special Aloha Concert tomorrow (Sat., Aug. 4, 2012) from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the Mission Memorial Auditorium, featuring performances by I-Bei Lin, University of Hawaii Associate Professor of Cello and Chamber Music; pianist Eric Wu; the Ka-Im Choir performing Taiwanese songs; Hula and Hawaiian music; and The World Games Tai-Zi group, performing the Techno Prince Nezha dance. The concert is free and open to the public.   A special photo exhibit featuring the work of artists from The Eyes of Honolulu Photographic Club and The Photographic Association of Kaohsiung will be on display at Honolulu Hale's Lane Gallery and 3rd Floor Gallery through August 19.   Kaohsiung was the fourth of 28 cities to officially become sisters of Honolulu. Over the years, Kaohsiung has presented Honolulu with important symbols of friendship and historical ties, including the pair of marble lucky lions at Hotel and Bethel streets, the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen located at the Sun Yat-sen mall, and several dragon boats.   Carlisle and a delegation from Honolulu met with officials in Kaohsiung last year to discuss infrastructure and economic development issues.     -30-   Media contact: Louise Kim McCoy, Mayor's Office, 768-7798.
