SEWER OVERFLOW AT KAILUA REGIONAL WWTP   (Sun., July. 31, 2011) – The City's Department of Environmental Services responded this morning to a sanitary sewer overflow at its Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. A sewer pipe broke around 7 a.m. causing an estimated 20,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into an in-plant storm drain that was contained in an adjacent drainage ditch.  The flow to the pipe has resumed while crews were dispatched to do repair work. APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR CITY LIGHTS DISPLAY    (Fri., July, 29, 2011)—Non-profit organization leaders interested in creating a Civic Center grounds display during the annual Honolulu City Lights exhibition are invited to submit applications to the Customer Services Department by August 26, 2011 at 550 South King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813   Permits will be issued for five display sites by a lottery scheduled for Monday, September 12. The lottery will be held at 10 a.m., in the Mission Memorial Hearings Conference Room at 550 South King Street. Applicants are welcome to attend the lottery, but need not be present to be selected.   The annual lottery was started several years ago in response to requests from private groups interested in building displays for the holiday event. Displays selected by lottery will be on view during Honolulu City Lights. Each organization that receives a permit must set up, maintain, and take down their display.   Applicants must be qualified non-profit organizations under HRS Chapter 41 SB or any charitable organization formed pursuant to HRS Chapter 467B or under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code. 2011 DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL AT ALA MOANA BEACH PARK   (Thurs., July 28) – The dragons will wake from their slumber for the annual Dragon Boat Festival at Ala Moana Beach Park this Saturday and Sunday, July 30th and 31st.   Everyone is welcome to get their hearts pumping watching paddlers from around the Pacific compete in the exciting, traditional Dragon Boat Races.    Enjoy two days of family fun that will also include live local entertainment, ono food and special craft booths as well as Futsal (a type of soccer) and grass volleyball tournaments. On Saturday evening, the movie "How to Train Your Dragon" will be screened under the stars. Admission is free. Event schedules are as follows.   Saturday, July 30 ·       8 am to 4 pm: Dragon Boat Races ·       10 am to10 pm: Family Festival with food, games, live entertainment ·       7:30 pm: Movie screening: "How to Train Your Dragon"               Sunday, July 31 ·       9 am to 3 pm: Dragon Boat Races ·       10 am to 6 pm: Family Festival with food, games, live entertainment   Dragon boat teams consist of a crew of 16 paddlers, a drummer, flag catcher and steersman. There are two race categories, the open race and division, which consists of teams competing for an industry trophy.    "Dragon boat races are an ancient Chinese tradition designed to ward off evil spirits," said Mayor Peter Carlisle. "We have merged this exciting competition with a family activity and want everyone to join us. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 28, 2011     TRAFFIC ADVISORY: TREE REMOVAL AND PRUNING TO AFFECT MANOA ROAD     (Thurs., July 28, 2011)—The City and County of Honolulu advises motorists to use precaution and alternate routes when work begins Monday, August 1, 2011, to remove and prune mature trees along Manoa Road, between the five-way stop and Puu Nanea Place.    The Department of Parks and Recreation's Division of Urban Forestry recently performed health evaluations on 17 trees along the route and found it necessary to remove two of the trees.  According to park officials, mature-sized branches of the monkeypod trees will be pruned to reduce their reach over the residences in accordance with industry standards, and general pruning will be performed on the remaining tree species.   The work is scheduled during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  No work will be performed on the weekends.      -30-           Contact:  Division of Urban Forestry, 971-7151

FAMILY FUN AT THE WAIMANALO COUNTRY FAIR   (Thu., July 28, 2011)—Mayor Peter Carlisle invites everyone to enjoy local entertainment, food and island crafts this weekend at the Waimanalo Country Fair, at Waimanalo Beach Park. The fun starts on Friday, July 29 at 6 p.m. and continues Saturday, July 30, from noon to midnight; and on Sunday, July 31, from noon to 10 p.m.                "This country fair offers a great way for visitors and residents to experience the community, charm and friendliness of Waimanalo," said Mayor Carlisle. "City workers, volunteers and local organizations work extremely hard to make these regional events a success. I encourage everyone to come out, have a good time, and show their support."   The event features E.K. Fernandez rides and games, food booths, an open market with vendors selling Waimanalo products, services and crafts. This year's event will offer wristbands for $20 on Saturday and Sunday that are good for 10 rides. The wristbands must be purchased by 3 p.m. and used on the same day. CITY SMOKE TESTING WASTEWATER PIPES IN WAIKAPOKI   (Mon., July 25, 2011) – The City's Department of Environmental Services (ENV) will smoke test a portion of the wastewater collection system in Waikapoki, July 26-29.            The daytime testing, which may last up to a week, is part of ENV's preventative maintenance program to prevent rainwater from entering the sewer system. ENV crews pump smoke into sewer pipes, examine whether smoke escapes and record its location. The smoke used is non-toxic, harmless and minimal odor. The smoke is neither a fire hazard nor health hazard to humans or pets.            Tests locate broken pipes, illegal connections, open cleanouts and other paths for runoff to enter the sewer system. Runoff from heavy rain can overwhelm and surcharge the sewer system and treatment plants, causing sanitary sewer overflows.            Residents and affected businesses will be notified by mail and door notices a few days before testing begins.
