2011 DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL AT (Thurs., July 28) The dragons will wake from their slumber for the annual Dragon Boat Festival at Ala Moana Beach Park this Saturday and Sunday, July 30th and 31st. Everyone is welcome to get their hearts pumping watching paddlers from around the Pacific compete in the exciting, traditional Dragon Boat Races. Enjoy two days of family fun that will also include live local entertainment, ono food and special craft booths as well as Futsal (a type of soccer) and grass volleyball tournaments. On Saturday evening, the movie "How to Train Your Dragon" will be screened under the stars. Admission is free. Event schedules are as follows. Saturday, July 30 · 8 am to 4 pm: Dragon Boat Races · 10 am to10 pm: Family Festival with food, games, live entertainment · 7:30 pm: Movie screening: "How to Train Your Dragon" Sunday, July 31 · 9 am to 3 pm: Dragon Boat Races · 10 am to 6 pm: Family Festival with food, games, live entertainment Dragon boat teams consist of a crew of 16 paddlers, a drummer, flag catcher and steersman. There are two race categories, the open race and division, which consists of teams competing for an industry trophy. "Dragon boat races are an ancient Chinese tradition designed to ward off evil spirits," said Mayor Peter Carlisle. "We have merged this exciting competition with a family activity and want everyone to join us.
