Wednesday, May 28, 2014 Contact: Christian Hellum 768-3496 Removal of Benjamin banyans on Monsarrat Avenue Honolulu – On Thursday, May 29, 2014, a tree care company retained by the City and County of Honolulu will begin removal of five mature Benjamin banyan trees fronting the Kapi'olani Regional Park Bandstand parking lot on Monsarrat Avenue near Kalakaua Avenue. Municipal arborists from the city's Division of Urban Forestry (DUF) have determined that these trees warrant removal due to a severe infestation of the Lobate Lac Scale. Attempts to remediate the effects of this insect with pesticide and pruning have failed. As a result, these trees warrant removal to prevent large branch or full-tree failure in this heavily trafficked area. Two adjacent Benjamin Banyans are in decline and will likely require removal soon. The work is expected to be completed by Friday, May 30, 2014. No parking will be allowed in the immediate area and intermittent lane closures will be necessary. If possible, please utilize alternate travel routes.
