HAWAII BAPTIST ACADEMY EARNS LEX BRODIE RECYCLING CHALLENGE

(Fri., June 1, 2012) - Hawaii Baptist Academy (HBA) captured first place in the fifth Lex Brodie's Earn and Learn School Recycling Competition, co-sponsored by the City's Department of Environmental Services.

In a single collection event, HBA collected $1,869, while Punahou School took second with $1,289.  Lex Brodie's Tire Company Foundation will issue a check for $1,000 to HBA and $500 to Punahou.

The recycling challenge, opened to public or private (elementary, middle or high) schools on Oahu, was held September 1, 2011, through March 15, 2012.  ENV supplied participating schools HI-5 collection bins.

There were 37 participating schools with 128 collection events.  Participants collected more than 700,000 HI-5 beverage containers and earned more than $34,000 from redemptions.

Competing schools earned anywhere from $100 to more than $1,000 per event.  Honorable mention honors went to Pearl City High Marching Band, Mid-Pacific Institute, Star of the Sea, Nuuanu Elementary and St. John the Baptist Catholic School, which earned more than $500 per recycling event.  Most schools held more than one collection event.  The most active schools were Kailua High, Kalaheo High, Montessori Community School and Iroquois Point Elementary School, who held monthly fundraisers and earned thousands of dollars.

The sixth annual recycling competition starts August 1, 2012, through March 15, 2013.  Next year's competition will be opened to all Hawaii schools (elementary, middle and high) statewide and will calculate the HI-5 collections cumulatively over the contest period.  Matching funds up to $1,000 and $500 will be awarded to the first and second place schools, respectively.
