CODE FOR AMERICA SEEKS TECH-SAVVY THINKERS (Fri., July 22, 2011)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today announced that the City and County of Honolulu has been selected as a finalist by Code for America for its 2012 national fellowship program. More than 20 government entities applied for this program and Honolulu is one of ten finalists. The selection demonstrates Honolulu's cutting-edge thinking and willingness to invest in long-term change through the development of new web-based technologies and also creates opportunities for tech-savvy individuals here. Code for America is a nonprofit comprised of civic and technology leaders, and is currently seeking local applicants for fellowships to build that technology for Honolulu. It recruits talent from the technology industry to give a year of service to build innovative web applications for city governments. Through a competitive process, Code for America chooses cities whose proposals reflect a deep understanding of how technology can improve cities. "This is a great opportunity for the City to advance its information technology capabilities, along with the potential to select tech savvy applicants from Hawaii," said Carlisle. "By partnering with Code for America, we can move forward with plans to provide innovative web applications that will help make our City more efficient, transparent and participatory." Jennifer Pahlka, founder and executive director of Code for America, said "One promising aspect of the program is to join the best thinking from the web industry with the best thinking from cities."
