Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

02/06/2011 07:30 PM EST

Based on data through 0000 UTC February 07 2011.

A front was moving over Kauai at midday today. This cold front extended through 30°N 155°W across Kauai to 16°N 170°W then continued west to near 13°N 180°E as a shear line. Broken to overcast cirrus clouds were flowing to about 400 miles east of the front north of 20°N latitude. The front was moving east near 25 miles an hour but is expected to slow and eventually stall over the central part of the island chain.

Broken to overcast low clouds prevailed along the frontal cloud band south of 25°N except for the cirrus along and east of the leading edge. North of 25°N, overcast layered clouds were the rule. The cloud band was generally void of thunderstorms at 2 pm. However, there may have been an isolated storm or two embedded and hiding within the cloud band to the north.

Nearly the entire state was cloudy or mostly cloudy at 2 pm. But Molokai to the Big Island had mostly cirrus clouds that were not thick enough to completely block out the sunshine. Kauai and Oahu had more significant clouds and showers overhead due the presence of the front.
