Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 16 Jan 2011 23:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 0430 UTC January 17 2011.

The tail end of a cold front is moving across Kauai and adjacent waters from the west and northwest as of bulletin time. Steady rain, showers, and isolated thunderstorms, and occasionally gusty winds, have been occurring over the area from Kauai to Oahu. Multilayered cloudiness with the front stretches from south of the islands to well north of 30 degrees north latitude. Most of these clouds are currently located within 150 miles either side of a line from 30°N 155°W to 24°N 158°W to 17°N 163°W. The band as a whole appears to be heading toward the east and southeast at 20 to 25 mph. Isolated showers have also been evident over Molokai, Maui, and the Big Island, where low clouds are scattered to occasionally broken.

Areas of broken low clouds and showers are currently north clockwise through south of the Big Island. These clouds have halted their westward movement as they encounter the advancing system now over Oahu and Kauai. Broken low clouds and isolated showers exist south of Maui county as well. Precipitation becomes more widespread in the Kaiwi Channel as the front moves down the chain.

In the upper air, a sharp north-to-south oriented trough associated with the surface front is now just west of the islands and is pushing rapidly east. The axis of the feature is roughly along a line from 30°N 160°W to 20°N 162°W.
