Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 05 Jan 2011 18:30:00 -0600
Based on data through 0000 UTC January 06 2011.
Since this morning low-cloud cover has increased over the Big Island of Hawaii and Kauai while low-cloud cover has decreased over water. High clouds have increased north and east of the islands. Broken to overcast clouds cover the Big Island below about 6500 feet of elevation with scattered to broken clouds over the higher elevations. Clouds are isolated over most areas of the islands from Maui to Oahu with patchy broken low clouds over the slopes. Broken to overcast low clouds blanket Kauai, while clouds are isolated over Niihau. A large area of broken to overcast high clouds covers the area north and east of the islands.
Low cloud motions southeast of the Big Island and through the Alenuihaha channel are from the east northeast at 10 mph. Low cloud motions off the windward sides of the islands from the Big Island to Oahu are from slightly south of east at 10 mph, becoming light and variable near Kauai. Broken to overcast low clouds extend 70 miles east of the Big Island. Low clouds are isolated upstream of the islands from Maui to Kauai. The clouds east of the Big Island are part of a poorly organized 225 mile wide band of broken low clouds south of a line from near the Big Island to 21°N 150°W to 19°N 140°W.
A 180 mile wide frontal cloud band is northwest and north of a line from 30°N 153°W to 28°N 155°W to 150 miles north of Kauai to 23°N 170°W to 24°N 180°W. The part of the band northeast of 26.5°N 157.5°W contains overcast layers and isolated cumulonimbus clouds with tops to 45000 feet. The rest of the band contains showery broken to overcast low clouds. Over the past 6 hours, the part of the front northwest of Kauai has moved southeast at 20 mph.
