DISCOVER RECYCLING FOR TEACHERS SEPTEMBER 25

(Tuesday, September 14, 2010) – The City's Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is hosting the 6th annual Discover Recycling event for teachers Saturday, September 25, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kapolei Hale.

The one-day event is free to educators and will showcase Honolulu's "trashier" side focusing on recycling resources available to schools.

The morning begins with a Tour de Trash of H-POWER, the City's waste-to-energy facility, Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill, Hawaiian Earth Products composting facility and the RRR materials recycling facility.  The bus will return to Kapolei Hale for a healthy, zero-waste lunch, including an onsite demonstration of vermicomposting (worms).

Afternoon workshops will showcase programs offered to schools by ENV's Recycling Teaching Partners to help teachers and their students learn more about recycling, worm composting, setting up classroom recycling programs, crafting with recycled materials and more. Also, a sneak peak of the upcoming opala assembly show, Sort it Out!, with performers Kealoha and Jonathan Sypert.

A few seats still remain for the event.  If interested, please contact Tamara Farnsworth, ENV Recycling Specialist, at 768-3448.
