TRAFFIC ADVISORY: LANE CLOSURES ON WAIPAHU DEPOT STREET   (Fri., May 20, 2011)—The two northbound lanes on Waipahu Depot Street will be closed 24-hours, five consecutive days starting Monday, May 23, through Friday, May 27, due to roadway construction. Work crews will be constructing a concrete bus pad between Hikimoe Street and Farrington Highway and reconstructing the sidewalk adjacent to the Hawaii Federal Credit Union across from Shiro's Drive Inn.               North and southbound traffic lanes on Waipahu Depot Street will be temporarily shifted to the other side of the road from Hikimoe Street to Farrington Highway. Police officers will be directing traffic at both ends of the construction work. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to use caution in this area.               Motorists are encouraged to avoid Waipahu Depot Street during the construction and use an alternate route, such as Mokuola Street, to get to the Waipahu Transit Center.                Bus patrons normally using the Waipahu Depot Street bus stop northbound just before Hikimoe Street are asked to use the transit center bus stops. VOTING DEADLINE FOR NEIGHBORHOOD BOARDS EXTENDED ONE DAY    (Fri., May, 20, 2011)—Due to issues with the availability of the City and County website, the deadline for eligible voters to cast a vote in the 2011 Neighborhood Boards election has been extended to Saturday May 21, 2011 at 11:59 pm.   Eligible voters received passcodes in the mail and were directed to www.honolulu.gov/nco where they can be linked to the actual voting website, hosted by elections vendor Everyone Counts on an outside server. Although the Everyone Counts site has been fully available, from Thursday, May 19 in the evening to Friday, May 20 in the morning, the City website was experiencing accessibility difficulties.     The alternate method of voting by phone remained available.  In order to give everyone who attempted to vote during the period when the City website was unavailable the opportunity to cast their ballot, the voting period has been extended by one day. 50,000 LEI NEEDED FOR MAYOR'S MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY   (Fri., May 20, 2011) – The City and County of Honolulu is seeking the public's help in providing 50,000 lei for the graves of our veterans this Memorial Day. The lei will be placed at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in time for the Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony on May 30, and at other veterans' cemeteries. Police Week Awards   This morning, Honolulu Police Chief Louis M. Kealoha announced the selection of Sergeant Lawrence F. Santos Jr. as the Honolulu Police Department's (HPD) Police Officer of the Year at the annual 200 Club awards ceremony.                     Sergeant Santos has 28 years of service and currently supervises the District 1 (Central Honolulu) Weed and Seed/Community Policing Team.  He has organized dozens of sign waving campaigns, citizen patrols, and graffiti paint-outs and leads a team of passionate and enthusiastic officers who are committed to helping residents through original, innovative programs, such as Project tHink! and Aloha No Na Kupuna, that partner with private agencies and community organizations to help at-risk teens and seniors.  When they are not actively promoting community policing, Sergeant Santos and his officers assist with prostitution stings, truancy enforcement, and other operations.                      Mr. Curtis T. Maeshiro was named Civilian Employee of the Year for the second time in his 30-year career at the HPD.  As a Research Analyst II in the Information Technology Division, he has become the element's expert for projects involving design, layout, and publishing.  Mr. Maeshiro has worked on projects, such as the HPD leadership MAP and the departmental strategic plan and annual report.  He also helped the division's Mobile Computing Section with major projects and serves on the HPD Mapping Committee for the department's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Planning Group.                      Ms. Dana L. Nakasato, who works for the State Judiciary Information Management System, received the Outstanding Citizen Award for her work in assisting the HPD's transition to the electronic bench warrants system.  She taught employees in the Records and Identification Division's Warrants Unit how to use the new system and conducted several training sessions at outlying police stations.  In addition, she updated the Electronic Bench Warrant Training Manual and continues to serve as a consultant for the Warrants Unit.  Her dedication and accomplishments have tremendously improved the warrants system.                     The 200 Club is an organization made up of approximately 200 prominent members of the community who actively support police officers and firefighters, especially during times of personal crisis.  The 200 Club also sponsors HPD programs and educational opportunities.

Bike to the Zoo Day   (May 17, 2011)—Lions and tigers and bears…can be viewed for free on Sunday, May 22, at the Honolulu Zoo—if you pedal to the City and County of Honolulu's Bike to the Zoo Day.    "We hope this fun, free event helps people see biking as a great alternative to driving a car, especially for shorter trips," said Department of Transportation Services Director Wayne Y. Yoshioka.  Bike to the Zoo Day is part of the City's sustainability initiative and promotes a multi-modal approach to transportation.   Anyone who rides their bike to the Honolulu Zoo will get in free from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the Monsarrat Avenue gate.  The City will provide free valet bicycle parking and goodies such as blinkers and safety materials.                                                                                                                      -30-   Contact: Chris Sayers, City Bicycle Coordinator, 768-8335.
