Wednesday, January 7, 2015 Contact:  Jon Hennington, DPR Public Information Officer at (808) 343-9181   Bellows Field Beach Park reopens after water leak repairs   Waimanalo – Bellows Field Beach Park and the adjacent campgrounds will reopen this weekend after crews from the Department of Recreation and the Board of Water Supply completed emergency repairs to a water line leak at the park. The park was closed on December 26, 2014, after the leak was discovered.   The park, part of Bellows Field Air Force Station, will reopen to the public beginning at noon on Friday.  Permits are available now through the Department of Parks and Recreation at http://camping.honolulu.gov.   Camping is allowed at Bellows Friday through Sunday only.  Three day permits cost $32.    -END-

January 5, 2015   Honolulu Fire Department recommends disposing your Christmas tree immediately   Now that the holidays are over and decorations are being put away, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) encourages everyone to remove and recycle their natural Christmas trees as soon as possible.   "A dry Christmas tree is a serious fire hazard.  While the tree itself won't start a fire, it is a fuel source that burns very quickly and can cause a fire to spread," said Fire Chief Manuel P. Neves.  "An indoor Christmas tree fire can be very devastating.  An outdoor Christmas tree fire is also very dangerous, as it can send flames, heat, and smoke billowing into a structure, thus endangering lives and property."   The HFD offers the following tips to help reduce the risk of a Christmas tree fire:   Never burn a Christmas tree or tree clippings in a fireplace.  This is likely to deposit highly flammable creosote in the chimney and may cause a fire to extend to the rest of your home.   Never burn a Christmas tree in a bonfire.  The pitch in the wood is likely to generate large, fast-moving sparks, which can spread a fire. Remember, rubbish fires are illegal.  Other open burnings, such as bonfires, require the Fire Chief's approval.   Do not leave your Christmas tree outside for a long period of time. Monday, January 5, 2015 Mayor Caldwell's Press Office: 768-5768 (cell 489-0341)   Honolulu Zoo Director resigns for personal reasons   HONOLULU – Honolulu Zoo Director Jeffrey Wilkinson announced his resignation to Zoo staff yesterday evening, citing personal reasons.   "I've made the difficult decision to resign my position at the Zoo and move back to California to care for my parents," Wilkinson said in an email to zoo staff sent last night. "I am so proud to have been part of this team.  During my short time here, I hope we've planted some seeds that will take root and one day bring more resources to the Zoo."   Assistant Zoo Director Dr. Baird Fleming will serve as acting director.   -END-
