6th Annual Bike to the Zoo Day this Sunday

BIKE TO THE ZOO DAY

Honolulu - This Sunday, May 18, is the 6th Annual Bike to the Zoo Day.  The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Zoo admission is free for anyone who rides a bicycle to the Honolulu Zoo during the event hours.  Bicyclists must enter from the Monsarrat Avenue gate.

The city is providing this free event to encourage people to visit the Honolulu Zoo and ride bicycles for short trips instead of driving their cars.  Mayor Kirk Caldwell endorses this multi-modal approach to transportation: "We hope this fun, free event will help people appreciate the value of a bicycle as an alternative to a car for shorter trips."

There will be free valet bicycle parking available and the first 200 bicyclists will receive a free bag with prizes.

Corpse plants continue to bloom at Foster Botanical Garden

Foster Botanical Garden to remain open until 6 p.m. today and tomorrow

Honolulu - Just weeks after "Mr. Stinky," one of Foster Botanical Garden's Amorphophallus titanum (corpse plant) bloomed, two more flowers have bloomed and one more is expected to bloom tomorrow.

Foster Botanical Garden is normally open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily, except for Christmas and New Year's Day.  The garden will remain open until 6 p.m. today and tomorrow to allow extra viewing time.

Native to Sumatra, Indonesia, the endangered Amorphophallus titanum is the largest unbranched inflorescence in the plant kingdom. Contributing to this plant's exotic allure is its pungent odor of rotting flesh, which serves to attract the carrion beetles that pollinate the flower.  These short-lived flowers only bloom once every three to five years.  Visitors will have the even rarer opportunity to see more than one of the flowers in bloom at the same time.

Other plants in the same Aroid plant family are on display to complement this impressive public collection:

  • Amorphophallus konjac, source of the Japanese yam cake konnyaku
  • Brightly colored Anthurium flowers
  • Various ornamental cultivars of Taro (or Kalo)

Foster Botanical Garden, located at 50 North Vineyard Boulevard in downtown Honolulu, is the oldest of the city's botanical gardens. The garden displays a mature and impressive collection of tropical plants. Some of the magnificent trees in this 14-acre garden were planted in the 1850s by Dr. William Hillebrand. The garden also includes a palm collection, the Lyon Orchid Garden, hybrid orchid display, the Prehistoric Glen, and a gift shop.

Cost for admission at Foster Garden is: $5.00 - general, 13 years and older; $3.00 - Hawaii resident 13 years and older with ID, $1.00 - Child 6 to 12 years old; free - Child 5 years old and under (must be with adult). Call 522-7066 for information.

Please "Like" Foster Botanical Garden or Mayor Kirk Caldwell on Facebook to find out when the Amorphophallus titanum blooms.

Long-awaited Opening of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Wait List

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced that the City and County of Honolulu is opening the Wait List for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.  "We recognize the need for rental assistance is great, and that families are anxious to apply," Caldwell stated.  "With the new online application system, applying will be easier and faster than ever before."

Online applications will be accepted from 12:00 a.m. on May 15, 2014, through 11:59 p.m. on May 21, 2014.   The use of the online application is strongly encouraged as it will provide the applicant with a receipt and it is accessible at all times during the designated period.  This method will provide equal opportunity for everyone to apply and no first-come, first-served advantage.  Only one application per household will be accepted.  For those without computer access, a terminal is available during normal business hours, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the 842 Bethel Street and Kapolei Hale Section 8 offices.  In addition, a number of nonprofit agencies will assist applicants by providing access to terminals during certain hours.

After the closing date, only a predetermined number of applications will be randomly selected and placed onto the Wait List.  The selected families will be notified by email or regular mail.  The random selection process and shorter list will ensure that contact information is current and also provide more frequent opportunities for families to apply.

The city closed its waitlist on May 27, 2005 when over 10,000 families had applied.

Applications will be accepted online at http://tinyurl.com/q22sh98

For computer access locations, please check the city's Section 8 webpage at http://www.honolulu.gov/dcs/housing.html

City responds to surge in demand for Reconstructed Vehicle permits

Honolulu – Following increased demand for inspections of modified vehicles to obtain a Reconstructed Vehicle permit, as a prerequisite for successful completion of vehicle safety inspection, the City and County of Honolulu has now successfully cleared a temporary backlog of permit applications.

Although there have been no recent changes implemented to regulations pertaining to vehicle modifications, a new electronic system utilized by safety inspectors since last fall causes inspectors to adhere more strictly to existing rules.

"The city has responded decisively to address the temporary surge in demand for permit applications, and I am pleased to note that we are now able to accommodate "drive-ins" and have the ability to schedule appointments," said Sheri Kajiwara, Director of the city's Department of Customer Services. "The rules governing reconstructed vehicles can be complex, so we recommend interested parties contact the inspection facility for guidance, based on the make and model of their vehicle, as well as the type of modification made."

Reconstructed Vehicle permits are required for vehicles that have been modified from the original manufacturer's specifications. Residents needing assistance with Reconstructed Vehicle permits may call 733-2542 or visit the inspection facility, located at 1112 Kapahulu Avenue (under the overpass adjacent to the King Street, Waialae Avenue and Kapahulu Avenue intersection).

Additional information regarding Reconstructed Vehicle inspections can be accessed at
